What is A Smart Meter?
A smart meter is a new type of electricity or gas meter that has been designed as a tool to help you manage your energy usage, lower your carbon emissions and most importantly help you save on your energy bill. It does this by providing automatic meter readings to your supplier which keeps your bills accurate and up to date.
At Dyce Energy, we believe in getting all eligible businesses upgraded to the latest technology in metering to not only benefit us, but our customers as well. We fully support the UKs government’s objective to get smart meters installed in every UK business and home.
How to get a smart meter
Getting a smart meter installed at your business premise is actually quite simple, the process typically involves:
On the day of your installation, your smart meter engineer will be in touch to let you know when they are on the way. Please ensure an individual over the age of 18 is present at the site, the engineer can access the property and that your existing meter is in an accessible area.
To install your smart meter the engineer will need to cut energy to the property for a short period, this is usually no longer than 30 minutes.
Please note: All smart meter installations are subject to eligibility.

All our smart meter engineers will be installing the newer SMET2 smart meters. These meters do not prevent you from switching supplier, they’re cross compatible. If you were to switch suppliers, your meter will be transferred over to your new energy supplier.
If you have an older model of smart meter, this can enter what is referred to as ‘dumb’ mode following a switch in providers. This means the smart meter has lost it ‘smart’ capabilities and will no longer send readings directly to your supplier but the information on the in house display will still be correct. In this instance your energy supplier will contact you regarding the installation of a newer smart meter.
Not every business is eligible to get a smart meter right now. This may be due to factors such as the meter installation requirements and/or poor network signal.
If you have applied for a commercial smart meter, but we are unable to currently proceed for any reason, one of our team will be in touch via email or phone to inform you of your options and next steps.

This is a common misconception, energy is usually cut for around 30 minutes, with the whole installation process taking roughly one hour.
Some suppliers will even offer installations on evening and weekends to reduce the impact on your business operations, however these spots are not regular and are usually limited.
By just having a smart meter installed you are not guaranteed savings on your energy costs.
Smart meters were built to provide you with greater insights into your energy usage, which you can then use to alter your business operations and activities to reduce consumption and improve efficiency which in turn should lead to cost savings.
If you been overcharged or receive an unexpected bill that you believe is due to a smart meter issue the best advice we can provide is to contact your energy supplier or broker directly to discuss this.
Most suppliers, Dyce Energy included, will then open an investigation into this and will ensure that any overpayments are returned to you.
This will be on a case by case basis, depending on what area of the UK your business is located.
If you are interested in having a smart meter, our best advice is to contact your supplier, they can then check to see if coverage extends to your area.
Yes and no, if you have debt on your energy account, your supplier will reach out for payment. If payment cannot be made at that time, most suppliers will set up a payment plan with your business to reclaim the debt.
However, if you ignore your energy suppliers attempts to contact you regarding your debt, your smart meter may be remotely changed to a pre-payment meter.
Before this takes place your supplier will contact you multiple times to try to resolve the debt, changing to a pre-payment meter is a last resort option.
